LAS VEGAS, NV. (March 25, 2019) – Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium announced its 2019 class of Medical Residents during the annual Match Day.

The match included residents for existing and new graduate medical education program, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation based at MountainView Hospital.

The announcement was made during the annual event called Match Day – when graduating medical students learn where they will be spending the next several years as residents. Matched residents filled in all open positions within the following programs:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Family Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Internal Medicine
  • OB-GYN
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Transitional Year (dual programs at MountainView and Southern Hills)

The talented group of 84 new residents will join the 154 current residents based at MountainView and Southern Hills. Specifically this cycle, 63 new residents matched at MountainView and 21 new residents matched at Southern Hills. The new residents will begin July 2019.

This year, Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium’s program received a significant amount of applications for a limited number of positions. To list a few, the Internal Medicine residency program received 1,178 applications for 22 positions, Emergency Medicine received 781 for eight positions, and Family Medicine received 1,115 for eight positions.

The 2019 Main Residency Match® was largest on record in the organization’s history[i] with a record-high 38,376 applicants, as reported by the National Resident Matching Program®, which matches fourth-year medical students with hospital and universities find the right “match” for their residency goals.

“This year’s successful match results were possible due to the dedication of our program directors and coordinators, faculty and facility leadership in creating an optimal experience for potential residents,” said Fran DeYoung, Division Director GME, HCA Far West Division. “Our growing resident class helps carry out the high standard for the future of our program, and each year we continue to emphasize our commitment to excellence for our hospitals and communities.”

MountainView Hospital launched its Graduate Medical Education program in 2015 with the accreditation of its Internal Medicine Residency Program from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Since that time, MountainView Hospital, Southern Hills Hospital and Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center received approval from the ACGME to join forces under the Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium, and continued to receive accreditation for General Surgery, Family Medicine, OB-GYN, Transitional Year, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

ACGME is a private, non-profit organization that evaluates and accredits graduate medical education (GME) programs. Residency is the final phase of a long educational process, required for a physician to practice medicine, and is most influential in determining where a physician eventually practices.
