Resident Spotlight - Dr. Matt Foley

Sunrise Health GME Surgical resident Dr. Matt Foley joined MountainView as part of the inaugural class of residents, and is currently in his fourth year of residency. This academic year, Dr. Foley received the opportunity to further his education in the field of his clinical interests through a research fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dr. Foley is originally from Austin, Texas, and has spent his undergraduate and doctorate years in College Station and Forth Worth respectively. Growing up, Dr. Foley always knew he would pursue a career in medicine. He gives credit to his many mentors, especially his dad, for growing his interests and passion for cardiac surgery.

“My dad is a cardiovascular surgeon, and when I was growing up, he was the one who inspired me to pursue a career in surgery,” says Dr. Foley. “I also have had many mentors who have helped me to further my education and sparked my interest in research. In the past couple of years, Dr. Michael Wood and Dr. Arnold Chung, at the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Associates at MountainView Hospital, reinforced my interest in cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Wood, in particular, encouraged me to pursue research. I was offered a spot at Vanderbilt and I couldn’t turn it down. ”

Dr. Foley will be spending a year at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for a post-doctoral research fellowship in cardiac surgery. The focus of his fellowship is on heart failure, specifically heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

“The future of this field is very promising and intriguing to me,” explains Dr. Foley. “I am thankful HCA gave me the opportunity to pursue this fellowship. There aren’t too many opportunities like this in Las Vegas, and at Vanderbilt, I will learn from and work with the experienced faculty in the Department of Cardiac Surgery.”

“This fellowship puts me in a position to become a well-rounded physician scientist in the field of cardiovascular medicine. I am interested in pursuing academic surgery and this fellowship will put me one step closer to achieving that goal.”

Congratulations on the fellowship, Dr. Foley! The Sunrise Health GME Consortium and affiliated hospitals are excited to recognize your passions, and be a part of your journey to a career in medicine.
