OBGYN Curriculum

Program Vision

The Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium’s OBGYN residency program’s vision is to offer an environment in which outstanding clinician-surgeons who practice humanistic medicine and are well prepared to enter careers in public, private and academic organizations are developed.

Program Mission

To attain competency in Medical-Knowledge, Patient Care, Practice-Based Learning & Improvement, Interpersonal & Communication Practice, Professionalism, Systems-based Practice by modeling and teaching competencies during daily rounds, lectures, and clinical practice.


Competencies are evaluated using the OBGYN Milestones. Milestones provide residents with progressive goals to encourage individual resident’s progress in the following areas:

  • Development of basic skills to effectively communicate and interact with patients, colleagues and support staff in a professional, competent, ethical and caring manner
  • Development of office skills in coding and documentation, and knowledge of managed care to effectively navigate a quality and cost-effective practice; and to understand the complex medico-legal environment in which the resident will practice by providing and understanding risk-management and the ethical issues related to obstetrics and gynecology practice
  • To instill in resident’s the attitude of a life-long learner throughout their medical career by providing the atmosphere for personal responsibility for one’s continued education
  • Development of teaching skills for the purpose of teaching other residents, students and non-physician colleagues
  • To teach competence in providing healthcare for women, capable to serve as a consultant in Obstetrics & Gynecology to non-Obstetrics & Gynecology physicians as consistent with the CREOG Educational Objectives Core Curriculum in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

CREOG Educational Objectives Core Curriculum in Obstetrics & Gynecology:

  • To master the Medical Knowledge set forth by the CREOG Educational Objectives using a structured curriculum addressing Primary and Preventive care, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Reproductive endocrinology, and Oncology, Uro-gynecology
  • To become proficient to perform &/or understand the Specialty Specific Procedures listed in the CREOG Educational Objectives by teaching residents general surgical principles and care; and by continuously evaluating individual surgeries and giving feedback on technical skills
  • To critically analyze the medical literature using principles of evidence based medicine through participation in structured discussions and in clinical research, quality improvement or patient advocacy by completing a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor and Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium Research Director
  • To provide exposure and experiences in the subspecialty areas of gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, maternal-fetal medicine and uro-gynecology, teaching the resident to make appropriate initial evaluations, recognize his/her limitations and the indications for referral
  • To stimulate interest in subspecialty fellowship training for those wishing to pursue these options
  • To develop confident clinical judgment and a high level of skill in clinical problem solving in the office and acute care environments, and to learn to effectively utilize appropriate diagnostic techniques and skills in the evaluation and management of all patients
  • To prepare the resident for medical practice and consultation for certification through successful completion of the basic written and oral American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Examinations
  • To successfully completed the four-year residency training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology through the Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium, completing all requirements for graduation in accordance with ACGME and ABOG guidelines by demonstrating the professional ability to practice competently and independently
